    New mural honoring Sun Ra and the Arkestra debuts on southern wall of October Gallery

    In the Orbit of Ra, a new mural on the southern wall of October Gallery Museum, honors Sun Ra and the Sun Ra Arkestra’s deep roots in Germantown. Co-designed by Ernel Martinez and Keir Johnston, the mural brings together years of planning, community partnerships, and public art work tied to the Arkestra’s longtime home base at 5626 Morton St.

    More money, more problems: Community members talk about how higher pay can create more strain

    At a Germantown Info Hub and Next City dinner, neighbors discussed how higher wages can sometimes create new financial strain by triggering the loss of public benefits. Attendees shared experiences with SNAP, Medicaid, disability benefits, caregiving costs, tax burdens, and the hidden labor of applying for support. They also pointed toward solutions, including free transportation, food hubs, child care support, universal health care, public housing, and stronger community safety nets.

    City Arts Salon’s ‘Soft Life’ exhibition centers Black Joy and Vulnerability

    At City Arts Salon, “Soft Life” asks what it means for Black communities to embrace softness, rest, and joy in a city that often demands survival first. The exhibition features visual artists Keshida Layone and Oronde Kairi, whose work explores identity, healing, self-preservation, and emotional well-being through stylized realism. The show remains on view through June 28 at 5838 Germantown Ave., with an artist talk on June 6 and a closing reception from 2 to 5 p.m. on June 28.
