Local chef and activist Valerie Erwin built a career around food, memory, and cultural preservation. As the former owner of Geechee Girl Rice Café, she brought Lowcountry, Gullah Geechee, Pan-African, and family-rooted dishes to Germantown and Mt. Airy — a move that helped shape how Philly understands Southern Black foodways. Now, after receiving major recognition from the Leeway Foundation and Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation, she continues her work through food access, community programs, catering, and new cultural preservation projects.
