    A running list of back-to-school giveaways happening in and around Germantown

    While the weather certainly may not display it, the summer is coming to a close next month, meaning it's time to usher in the 2024-25 school year. To help families meet their needs for a successful start to the year, various community groups and institutions provide giveaways of essentials like backpacks, notebooks, and even haircuts for your young ones.

    The Germantown Info Hub has compiled a list for neighbors to browse and share with anyone who may be interested. We will update readers with more events as they become available. 

    Backpacks & School Supply Giveaway

    Organizers: 6300 Germantown Avenue Business Alliance

    What to know: Backpacks and school supply giveaway. It happens at The Concord School (6309 Germantown Avenue) on Saturday, August 24, at 10 a.m. until supplies are gone. Visit concordschoolhouse.org for more details.

    Community Back to School Giveaway Event

    Organizers: Top of Da Block

    What to know: In addition to the expected backpacks and school supplies for kids, there will also be music, games, and food for all. The first 40 children will also receive haircuts. It happens Saturday, August 24, from 12 to 4 p.m. at Happy Hollow Playground (4800 Wayne Avenue).

    Back to School 2024

    Organizers: First United Methodist Church of Germantown (FUMCOG)

    What to know: Besides the supply giveaways, there will be games and activities for children, with prizes at the end. There will also be music and snacks. Check it out on Saturday, August 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at FUMCOG’s parking lot at 6001 Germantown Avenue.

    Back-to-School Celebration

    Organizers: Senator Art Haywood’s Office

    What to know: The Senator’s office will help distribute backpacks and school supplies for families while supplies last. There will also be free lunch, community resources, face painting, performances, a video game and science truck, and much more. It happens Saturday, August 24, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Lonnie Young Recreation Center (1100 E Chelten Avenue).

    Back-to-School School Supplies + Book Bag Drive

    Organizers: Born Boss Clothing

    What to know: As the name suggests, there will be supplies and bookbags for families. There are also games, food, and drinks advertised. This is happening at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, at 800 E Washington Lane.
