Now in the midst of Summer, July will bring a large slate of events to Germantown that will give folks a variety of offerings.

From top to bottom, this month is filled with events encouraging neighbors to get outside and be with each other. Whether it’s dancing in the park or historic house tours, there’s always something to do around town.

The Germantown Info Hub has compiled a list of free and low-cost events this month that neighbors can be on the lookout for.

July 2: The Stenton Museum at 4601 N. 18th St. will host its Wawa Welcome America Free Museum Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., where tours of the historic house will be offered every half hour. To reserve a tour time, visit TicketLeap, call Stenton at 215-329-7312, or email programs@stenton.org.

July 2: Awbury Arboretum opens David Sweeney’s (also known as performer Johnny Showcase) ‘Make’em Stand Still’ art exhibition at their Cope House Gallery (1 Awbury Rd.). They will also host an opening reception on July 9.

July 3: Ubuntu Fine Art will redisplay his body of work entitled “UNBOUND: A Visual Study on the Nature of Freedom” at the gallery at 5423 Germantown Ave. beginning this Friday. The opening reception takes place on the same date, from 4-7 p.m. UNBOUND consists of photographs of Taylor’s encounters in Kenya “that observe freedom through a lens of requiring less.”

July 4: The Concord School House holds its Fourth of July celebration from 12–4 p.m. There will be tours of the property, live performances, a bell-ringing ceremony at 2 p.m, and dramatic speech readings from the Grounded Theatre Company’s Youth Conservatory, reciting works from civil rights activist Ella Baker and John Lewis.  

July 4: The Cliveden House at 6401 Germantown Ave will have its Wawa Welcome America Free Museum Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day includes free tours of the house, with the chance to see the new ‘Procuring Liberty in the Emerging Nation’ exhibit.

July 4: Take a Village Story Hour session from 2–4 p.m. at the d’griot cafe at 51 Maplewood Mall. Families can partake in activities and crafts while engaging with tales that represent the stories of Black and Brown people. Register ahead.

July 6: The Johnson House Historic Site kicks off its Underground Railroad and Ashay Club Cultural Summer Camp for youths, ages 6-15. This camp teaches the legacy of the Underground Railroad and the struggle for liberation from enslavement through lessons, readings, discussions, films, music, and arts & crafts. Sessions are every week, Mondays to Thursdays from 12:30–3:30 p.m., until Aug. 6 at 6306 Germantown Ave. RSVP by emailing info@johnsonhouse.org. 

July 11: The Cliveden House holds the Wingohocking Watershed Tour from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., led by Philadelphia Water Department historical consultant Adam Levin. Attendees will learn about some of the city’s hidden infrastructure, including the historical creeks buried under the city’s sewers. The tour starts and ends at Cliveden. General admission is $20; $10 for 19119 and 19144 residents, Friends of Cliveden members, and National Trust members. Register and learn more.

July 11: Germantown United CDC hosts their July G-Town Gathering: Second Saturday event at the Wyck House (6026 Germantown Ave.) from 12–4 p.m. Neighbors can enjoy free tours, face painting, chair massages, local vendors, a beer garden, and some good food. 

July 11: Historic Germantown holds its Stamp Rally Wrap Party at 5501 Germantown Ave. from 12–4 p.m. There will be refreshments, lawn games, and a raffle drawing for the community. Winners of this year’s stamp rallies can also claim their prizes.

July 11: The Attic Brewing Company at 137 Berkley St. will hold its Leading Ladies Beer Festival from 4–9 p.m., featuring women-owned breweries and cideries and live performances from women-led bands.

July 12: Sisters with an Agenda will host its third annual Community Day on the lawn of the old Germantown High School, from 3–6 p.m. There will be a variety of vendors, food, activities, and giveaways, as well as an award ceremony at 5 p.m., honoring impactful community members.

July 13: Action Center 8, located within the Coleman Library, hosts an Affordable Housing Meeting, designed to share opportunities from the city like home repairs, access to loans, and housing programs designed to help. The Philadelphia Housing Development Corporation and the Philadelphia Housing Authority will be present. It happens at 68 W. July 14: Learn how to safeguard your home, finances, and future while gaining useful information about estate planning and preserving generational wealth. The workshop, hosted by State Rep. Andre D. Carroll and the Affordable Housing Centers of PA, will take place at Capacity Church at 5301 Wayne Ave., from 5–7 p.m. See more here.

July 14, 21, & 28: Councilmember Cindy Bass hosts her Jazz, Funk, and Soul edition of her Summer with Cindy: Free Concert Series at the Morris Estate Recreation Center at 1610 W. Chelten Ave. These happen the final three Tuesdays of the month, from 5–7 p.m.

July 15, 22, & 29: Councilmember Bass hosts her popular Oldies in the Park series, as part of Summer with Cindy, on the final three Wednesdays of the month, from 5–7 p.m., at Vernon Park (5800 Germantown Ave). 

July 15–17: The Cliveden House hosts its ‘Croquet, Picnic, Bingo, and More’ series of events from 5–8 p.m. on each day. Neighbors can come out and engage in a scavenger hunt, a game of bingo, and a round of croquet while socializing in Cliveden’s green space.

July 18: Margo Creative Designs will host its Health on the Block: Community Wellness and Healthy Marketplace at Maplewood Mall from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will feature local vendors with a variety of wellness products and services, as well as food and other activities.

July 18: Falconer Courtney Douds will hold her Raptor Jawns event from 10–11:30 a.m. at the Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion at 200 W. Tulpehocken St. She will teach attendees about two of Germantown’s native birds, a red-tailed hawk and a screech owl, including their natural history, biology, and role in the local ecosystem. The birds will be present, and community members will be able to get up close and personal.

July 22: The Wyck Historic House at 6026 Germantown Ave. will host its Curator’s Tour: Revolutionary Wyck event from 5:30–7 p.m. The evening includes conversation about Wyck’s revolutionary history, and see rare objects from Wyck’s collection. Tickets are $11.20 for Wyck members; $16.30 for Non-Wyck members. RSVP here. Email info@wyck.org with questions.

July 23: State Rep. Carroll partners with Record Eraser PA and CareerLink to bring folks a Criminal Record Info Session, where folks can have questions answered about their criminal record and how it impacts their job opportunities. It happens from 4–6 p.m. at 5847 Germantown Ave. See more here.
