Fall into fun before school starts: a list of kid-friendly events this weekend in Germantown

The 2022-23 Philadelphia school year is on the horizon as kids return Monday. If you’re a parent looking to give your kids a fulfilling weekend before you send them back, check out this list of events happening this weekend in Germantown.

Games and Fun Under The Shady Old Tree

The Friends of Vernon Park hosted a series of activities for kids throughout August. This Friday marks the final event of the series, where they will offer games and activities like jump rope, marbles, Jenga, and more. The activities will begin at 10 a.m. and end at noon, but you’re welcome to stay and enjoy the park after. Vernon Park, 5800 Germantown Avenue.

Barbecue and Free Haircuts

Rob Da Barber Inc. is hosting a five-hour event at the Pennsylvania Barber School, where they will provide food and free haircuts for kids heading back to school. We recommend getting there as early as possible as free haircuts may be a huge attraction for this giveback event. The barber school is located at 1432 E. Washington Lane and will start at 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m.

Black Soul Block Party

Last month, Black Soul Vintage hosted their first ever vendors market in front of their space with about 20 vendors. This Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., they’ll be doing it all again to uplift Black-owned businesses, artists, and creators. The market will take place at the shop at 90 E. Church Lane.

Jabali Jungle Celebration

Black & Planted is hosting another year of Jabali Jungle, celebrating Black & POC-owned plant & flower shops as well as urban farms. There will be tons for adults to do, like take some classes, shop for plants & flowers, and a bloom bar. There is a kids’ corner planned with activities for the kiddos.

Jabali Jungle will happen at the Wyck House at 6206 Germantown Avenue. Visit www.blackandplanted.com to learn more about the event.

The Mappening is Happening at Maplewood Mall

The Friends of Maplewood Mall hosts six hours of fun for the community. Every Mappening features live music, vendors, and arts & crafts from noon to 6 p.m. Past Mappenings have included an open mic slot from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. At the same time, families can support the businesses that inhabit the strip. This Saturday, the Germantown Espresso Bar will also be celebrating its fifth anniversary with special guests planned.

Families can access Maplewood Mall on Armat Street from either Greene Street or Germantown Avenue.

FUMCOG Back to School Event

The First United Methodist Church of Germantown is hosting a back-to-school event this Sunday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. There will be lots of fun like games, face painting, free food, and resources like information tables and free school supplies. Guests can also expect a Dance and Drum Circle by Sistahs Laying Down Hands. The event will happen on their grounds at 6001 Germantown Avenue.
