    Resourceful workshops and clinics underway in Germantown

    A variety of information sessions are scheduled to take place this month in the neighborhood, focusing on utilities, weatherization, SNAP, and other topics.

    As the weather breaks and the cold begins to seep in, organizations and elected officials launch initiatives to help those in need stay safe and warm. This month, there’s an influx of workshops and clinics happening in Germantown that will bring neighbors a step closer to catching up on bills, accessing heat, and even keeping their SNAP benefits secure.


    Service Area Briefing: Weatherization & Utility Resources

    Who: Germantown United CDC

    What: Preparation for the winter months, info on how to lower bills, and other access to assistance.

    When: Thursday, Nov. 6, from 6–8:30 p.m.

    Where: Crossroads Women’s Center (5011 Wayne Ave.)

    More info: RSVP ahead; free rides to and from the event; dinner will be provided.


    ECA’s LIHEAP Kickoff Energy Fair

    Who: Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry (GACM) & Energy Coordinating Agency (ECA)

    What: Learn about utility bill assistance and other community resources for income-eligible neighbors. There will also be legal resources for seniors and an ECA Comprehensive Energy Workshop.

    When: Friday, Nov. 7, from 2–6 p.m.

    Where: First Presbyterian Church (35 W. Chelten Ave.)

    Ready Community Workshop

    Who: Office of Emergency Management

    What: A sharing of practical tips for protecting your home during cold weather and discussing what recovery looks like after emergencies.

    When: Saturday, Nov. 8, from 2–4 p.m.

    Where: The Water Shed (5300 Wayne Ave.)

    Utility Clinic

    Who: The Office of Councilmember At-Large Nicolas O’Rourke

    What: Free legal experts and representatives from utility companies will be on hand to answer your questions. Other city and community resources also served.

    When: Friday, Nov. 14, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

    Where: Germantown Mennonite Church (21 W. Washington Ln.)

    SNAP Defense Training

    Who: Crossroads Women’s Center and Community Legal Services

    What: Legal representatives will be available to help neighbors learn about SNAP work requirements and exemptions, how to document their work to keep assistance, and other issues.

    When: Friday, Nov. 21. Time to be announced.

    Where: 5011 Wayne Ave.

    Note: LIHEAP is delayed to Dec. 3 because of the government shutdown, but these organizations are still having these events to ensure residents can get help, fill everything out early, and get other utility support.
