The City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program designed a series of murals around the Wayne Junction train station. The purpose of the project is to visually bring Nicetown and Germantown together, according to Project manager Kali Silverman.
“I think they are really tight knit in their own communities and then this became an opportunity to actually bring the communities together,” Silverman said. “We at mural arts believe that art ignites change and starting community conversations based around how can we make our space look nicer”
The community and project artists collaboratively decided on the design. The artists for the project are Cesar Viveros, Rebecca Schultz, and Matt Halm. Community meetings were held over the past year, but the progress slowed due to COVID-19. Now Mural Arts, SEPTA, and artists are moving ahead.
The end of July will finish Helms’ portion of the installation, and Schultz and Viveros will add their art later in the summer.
