    Where to buy fresh produce in Germantown this summer and beyond

    If you’re looking to buy fresh fruits & vegetables, you’re in luck because Germantown houses four different summer markets. If you’re free during the weekend in the morning and early afternoon, you should check out these local farms and markets, helping to make fresh food more accessible in the neighborhood.

    Germantown Farmers Market

    Run by Philly Forests, the Germantown Farmers Market operates in Market Square at 5501 Germantown Avenue across from the “Germantown White House.” This market begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m., featuring vendors like Odabu selling goods in addition to fresh food. The market runs weekly on Saturdays through November and accepts SNAP benefits.

    Germantown Kitchen Garden

    The Germantown Kitchen Garden operates a farmstand on Saturdays where you can purchase greens, sourdough bread, kombucha, and much more fresh produce. And if that isn’t convincing enough, visit their plant nursery, where you can purchase shrubs, perennials, and annuals. The garden stands at 215 E. Penn Street and will be open through October from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Germantown Kitchen Garden does accept SNAP, and you can visit their website to purchase plants online.

    Grumblethorpe Youth Farmstand

    The site-based service group of young volunteers hosts a weekly farmstand smaller than the other sites mentioned above but still provides an excellent way for neighbors to support local farming. The farmstand operates on Saturdays at 5267 Germantown Avenue from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will run through August. The farmstand accepts SNAP benefits.

    Kelly School Garden Farmstand

    The Kelly School Garden Farmstand is a smaller, pay-what-you-wish stand. They operate every second and fourth Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 5116 Morris Street. The stand’s season will end on September 24th. The stand does not accept SNAP benefits, but works to make food affordable with the pay-what-you-wish model.
