Restore Germantown’s cinema culture — one Third Space at a time
Germantown used to be home to a wide range of neighborhood movie theaters, each with its own identity and role in local social life. This piece traces that history, from early cinemas like the Orpheum to the disappearance of the neighborhood’s last theater in 1972, and makes the case for reviving movie culture through nontraditional spaces like rec centers, historic sites, coffee shops, and vacant lots.
