2025 is officially behind us, and what better time to be a changemaker than at the top of the year? The opportunity to do so presents itself through the regular “day of service,” otherwise known as MLK Day.
This month, there are various events for neighbors to give their time, share thoughts and talk space, and grab a meal.
MLK Jr. Seminar Weekend
October Gallery Museum (6353 Greene St.) — Saturday through Monday, January 17–19, 1–6 p.m. every day.
The October Gallery Museum compiles a weekend of art exhibits and conversation centered on a variety of Black cultural and social topics. There will also be artwork for sale. RSVP here.
MLK Jr. Day of Service Clean-Up
5700 Greene St. — Sunday, January 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Rain date: January 25)
Germantown United CDC hosts neighbors in helping to clean up the corridors surrounding Greene & Chelten. Bring a broom and some gloves! Refreshments are provided. Sign up here.
Seventh Annual Dr. King Beloved Community Event
FUMCOG (6001 Germantown Ave.) — Monday, January 19, 12–3 p.m. (Rain date: January 31)
In this yearly gathering, GREAT facilitates knowledge & resource sharing, group activities, and networking to explore housing justice & housing affordability in Germantown. Germantown Fridge: MLK Day
FUMCOG (6001 Germantown Ave.) — Monday, January 19, 12–2 p.m.
Organizers of the Germantown Community Fridge usually hold their monthly meal on a Saturday, where all can come through and grab a bite. This month, in the spirit of MLK Day, they’ll move to the Day of Service and also host a block clean-up to coincide with the meal. A Warming of Our Neighborhoods Quilt-A-Thon
Stenton House (4601 N. 18th St.) — Monday, January 19, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This quilting event will weave history and community, as neighbors as invited to create handmade quilts, which will be distributed to those who may need them. RSVP here.
