As fall approaches, September will bring a full slate of events to Germantown.

September is filled with events that encourage neighbors to get outside and spend time together. From art-driven gatherings to large community festivals, there’s always something to do around town.

The Germantown Info Hub has compiled a list of free, low-cost, and ticketed events this month for neighbors to check out.

Sept. 1: Neighborhood Community Action Center 8 is hosting SuccessPhilly from 1–3 p.m. at the Joseph E. Coleman Northwest Regional Library (68 W. Chelten Ave.). Visitors can meet one-on-one with a human resources professional from the city’s Office of Human Resources and learn about job opportunities, hiring processes, and more.

Sept. 5: Morris Estate Recreation Center hosts a Third and Long Community Event from noon to 4 p.m. at 1610 W. Chelten Ave. The first-come, first-served event will feature a school-uniform giveaway, flag football, resource tables, vendors, food, and refreshments.

Sept. 8: State Rep. Andre  D. Carroll and State Sen. Art Haywood are holding a free food giveaway from 10 a.m. to noon at the Historic Holsey Temple (5305 Germantown Ave.). Free school supplies will also be provided to students in grades K-12. Organizers recommend bringing reusable bags. Contact Senator Haywood’s office at (215) 242-8171 with any questions.

Sept. 10: Center in the Park at 5818 Germantown Ave is hosting its Open House from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. At the event, neighbors can learn more about CIP’s classes, workshops, trips, and upcoming events while participating in raffles and giveaways. The backyard barbecue will begin at 12 pm, which will feature music and lunch for visitors. The open house is open to all, but guests should RSVP for lunch by calling the program office at (215) 848-7722, ext. 225. 

Sept 10: The Northwest Philly Immigrant Justice Coalition is hosting Dismantling Detention: How to Fight Back and Win Against ICE Detention from 6-8:30 p.m at the Unitarian Society of Germantown (6511 Lincoln Drive). There will be panel discussions, breakout groups, and strategy sessions intended to inform and protect community members at risk of detention. Attendees will also hear from neighbors who have been detained by ICE and will share their experiences. To learn more about the event or to register, click here.

Sept. 10-12: The Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks is hosting three Firefly Nights at Grumblethorpe at 5267 Germantown Ave. The events will run from 5–7 p.m. on Sept. 10 and 12, and from 5–9 p.m. on Sept. 11. Each night will feature lawn games and activities, lemonade, s’mores, and kids’ crafts.

Sept. 11: The ACES Veterans Museum, 5801 Germantown Ave., is hosting its Patriots Day from 1–6 p.m., honoring the victims, heroes, and first responders of 9/11. For more information, contact the museum at (215) 842-3742 or (267) 779-1156.

Sept. 12: The East Germantown Legacy Community Cookout returns to Awbury Park, 6100 Ardleigh St., from noon to 7 p.m. Enjoy music from DJ PiG and a live performance by Intersection.

Sept. 12: Germantown United CDC will host Second Saturday: G-town Gatherings from noon to 4 p.m. at Grumblethorpe, 5267 Germantown Ave. The community event will feature live music, food trucks, and local vendors.

Sept. 12: The Wyck Historic House and Garden, 6026 Germantown Ave., is holding the Philadelphia Honey Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival will feature a vendor marketplace, honey extraction demos, honey tastings, a plant sale, a bee beard, family activities, Wyck tours, food trucks, and more. Sept. 12: Cliveden of the National Trust at 6401 Germantown Ave. is holding its Spotlight Tour: Revolutionary Germantown from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The walking tour will explore what happened during and after the Battle of Germantown in 1777. Sept. 12: The iMPeRFeCT Gallery at 5539 Germantown Ave. is hosting a plant and yard sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., featuring a variety of items, including houseplants, bikes, and instruments.

Sept. 12: Men Who Care of Germantown is hosting its 8th annual Community Outreach Festival at 180 E. Tulpehocken Street from 11:45 a.m.–8 p.m. The day will begin with a community walk at Germantown High School at 11 a.m., proceeding to the festival site. The festival will feature resource tables, vendors, food, and live music.

Sept. 12: Poetry, Blerds and Jams is hosting its Spoken Word Comic Con from noon to 7:00 p.m. at The Braid Mill, 441 High St. The event is a celebration of black imagination and creativity in spoken word, comics, fantasy, science fiction, and Black speculative art. There will be panel discussions, a marketplace for creators, workshops, and a spoken-word poetry concert. Tickets start at $75; click here to learn more. 

Sept. 12: Capacity Church, 5301 Wayne Ave., is hosting its We Outside Festival at noon, featuring resources that promote economic empowerment, local art, food, and music.

Sept. 12: The Stenton Museum (4601 N. 18th St.) is hosting a nature adventure in collaboration with In Color Birding and the Philadelphia Horticultural Society from noon to 4:00 p.m. Visitors of all ages can explore the wildlife of Stenton. To register, visit here.

Sept. 12: Historic Germantown is kicking off its 250th Stamp Rally Contest from noon to 4 p.m. Community members can pick up booklets at participating historic sites and learn how to enter the contest, which runs through Nov. 14. Sept. 12: This month’s edition of Second Saturday G-Town Gatherings will be held at Grumblethorpe from noon to 4 p.m., where there will be local vendors, live music, and food trucks.

Sept. 12: The Achievement Foundation is hosting the Germantown Food Truck Festival from 1–6 p.m. along the 5400 block of Germantown Ave. The event will feature a variety of food vendors, music, art, fitness, and more. Sept. 15: Artist Tieshka K. Smith is hosting “And Now What?,” the first Chat & Chew of her #10YearsOfRacismIsASickness residency, from 6–8 p.m. at G-Town Radio. The intimate gathering will use food, conversation, and a portrait-making activity to explore race, personal responsibility, and action. Sept. 15: Philly Vegan Gal Pals will host a meetup from 6 to 8 p.m. at Salam Cafe, 5532 Greene St. Attendees can enjoy Ethiopian food, meet other vegans, and make new friends. Registration is available through the group’s Facebook or Instagram pages.

Sept. 18: ARTrageous Brush and Flow is hosting the Germantown Vibes Community Art Experience from 6–9 p.m., along the 6300 block of Germantown Ave. The night will feature oil painting, live music, Center in the Park’s senior chess club, and Spoken Word Poetry.

Sept. 18: The Joined Hands Artists Collective is presenting its In Community art exhibition at the Allen Lane Art Center (601 W Allens Lane) from Sept. 5 to Oct. 10. The exhibition features watercolor, collage, fiber, mixed media, photography and ceramics from 11 artists exploring how community shapes people’s lives and connects humans, animals and the natural world. The artist reception and talk will be held from 6–8 p.m. on Sept. 18, giving attendees an opportunity to hear directly from the participating artists.

Sept. 19: The Germantown Community Fridge is hosting its Neighbors Table Pasta Party from noon to 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Germantown (6001 Germantown Ave.). Attendees should enter at 19 E. High St. Neighbors are welcome to enjoy a free community pasta dish, with portions also available to take home.

Sept. 23–27: Parks on Tap returns to Germantown and Mt. Airy’s Cliveden Park with food, drinks, seating, and community vibes. The event is free, but attendees must sign in as free members each visit; membership is required once per season and can be completed on-site or online. Guests under 21 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and alcoholic drinks must remain within the gated area.

Sept. 26: Meet local committee members and 8th District ward leaders during a community gathering at Black Leadership Pennsylvania, 400 W. Chelten Ave., from 2–6 p.m. A light buffet and refreshments will be served. Registration is available through Eventbrite.

Sept. 26: The Jabali Market is hosting its Rooted and Planted market at Maplewood Mall from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring a vendor marketplace, workshops, line dancing, music, and more, all celebrating plant culture.
