With the Summer approaching, June is set to bring a large slate of events to the community that will give folks a variety of offerings.
From historic tours and nature-related activities to vendor-filled events and workshops where you can learn something new, this month will create social spaces unique from one another.
The Germantown Info Hub has a list of free and low-cost events this month that neighbors can be on the lookout for.
June 7: Mural Arts Philadelphia will host a Mural Arts Walking Tour in Germantown from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., which will highlight a variety of Murals throughout the neighborhood. Folks will meet at the Weavers Way Co-op at 328 W. Chelten Ave. Tickets are $28 for ages 13 and up, and are $21 for ages 12 and under. Register ahead.
June 7: The Five Shorts Project will hold a public memorial for Allen “Tanch” Taylor from 12–2 p.m. at Vernon Park, located at 5800 Germantown Ave. The gathering will honor Taylor, who was lost to gun violence in 2020, along with other lives lost to gun violence throughout Germantown. Attendees are encouraged to bring posters, memorial T-shirts, photos, and signs to honor loved ones. Learn more here.
June 9: Germantown Community Fridge will host its Volunteer Hangout from 6–8 p.m. at Attic Brewing Company, located at 137 Berkley St. Neighbors can connect over food and drinks while learning more about volunteer opportunities with Germantown’s community fridges.
June 9: Cliveden of the National Trust and West Mount Airy Neighbors will host an Old House Care Workshop from 6:30–8 p.m. at the Cliveden Barn, located at 98 E. Cliveden St. The workshop will cover the do’s and don’ts of historic painting for building exteriors and interiors, including how to address exposed wood, cracks in stucco, and basic repair needs. The class fee is $10.
June 10: Mt. Airy CDC will host its Supper Session Festival from 5–9 p.m. along the 7100 and 7200 blocks of Germantown Ave. A variety of food vendors will line the corridor for an evening of outdoor dining and community gathering.
June 12: Historic Germantown will host Stamp, Stretch, and Stroll from Historic Germantown to Vernon Park from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., beginning at Historic Germantown, located at 5501 Germantown Ave. Participants will visit several locations along the route to Vernon Park, collecting stamps along the way for prize qualification.
June 12: Weavers Way at 328 W Chelten Avenue will host a Mural Unveiling Celebration from 4–6:30 p.m., celebrating the debut of its “Weaving a Bountiful Harvest” mural on the side of the store, designed by artist Eurhi Jones. There will be a ribbon cutting, a DJ, art activities for kids, snacks, and light refreshments.
June 13: Joseph E. Coleman Library (68 W. Chelten Ave.) will host a livestream presentation of TED Democracy Philadelphia: Founding Futures. The program features 15+ new TED Talks exploring the past, present, and future of modern democracy as Philadelphia prepares for America’s 250th birthday.
June 13: See history in the making at the new Sun Ra Mural unveiling. Artists with Mural Arts Philadelphia are creating a new Afro-futurist tribute to legendary jazz bandleader Sun Ra at the October Gallery Museum (6353 Greene St.). Stop by through June 13 to see the mural take shape, learn about Sun Ra’s connection to Philadelphia, and explore the project. The mural dedication celebration takes place on June 13, from noon to 2 p.m., with live music, refreshments, and giveaways.
June 13: Cliveden of the National Trust will host its Transcending Thresholds spotlight tour from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Cliveden House. The tour will explore the property’s landscape and share stories of enslaved individuals and servants who labored there during the Chew family’s occupation. Tickets are $10 for Friends of Cliveden members, National Trust members, and residents of 19119 and 19144, and $20 for all other attendees. Register ahead.
June 13: Ebenezer Maxwell Mansion will offer free tours from 12–3 p.m. at 200 W. Tulpehocken Street. Visitors can explore the 167-year-old Victorian mansion and learn more about its history and connection to Germantown. The event is free, and no RSVP is required.
June 13: Cliveden of the National Trust will offer free tours of Cliveden House from 12–4 p.m. at 6401 Germantown Ave. Visitors can explore the 259-year-old historic site and learn more about its history and connection to the Germantown community. The event is free, and no RSVP is required.
June 13: The Jabali Market and Black and Planted will host their Juneteenth Jubilee Fest from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Maplewood Mall (Greene St. and Armat St.). There will be live music, food, arts and crafts, and many family-friendly activities.
June 13: The Germantown United CDC will host its Second Saturday: G-town Gathering from 12–4 p.m. at Market Square ( 5501 Germantown Ave). There will be food trucks, live music, and a variety of local vendors, with an aim of celebrating the cultural heritage of the neighborhood. Click here to learn more.
June 13: Stenton Museum and UPenn’s Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts will host a Family Archive Workshop from 12–4 p.m. at 4601 N. 18th St. Neighbors can learn how to preserve old photos, letters, and paper-based memorabilia to protect family history and share it with future generations. June 13: The Lonnie Young Recreation Center at 1100 E. Chelten Ave will be hosting its Sports Fest from 2–6 p.m., where neighbors are welcomed to come out and enjoy different sporting activities with friends and family.
June 20: Senator Art Haywood, State Rep. Andre Carroll, and Councilmember Anthony Phillips will host a Homeownership Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at West Oak Lane Charter School, located at 7115 Stenton Ave. The annual event will connect community members to homeownership resources and include a panel discussion, bankers, and realtors on site, raffles, and food. RSVP ahead.
June 20: Johnson House Historic Site will host the Philadelphia Juneteenth Festival from 12–7 p.m. along the 6300 block of Germantown Ave. The community celebration will feature food trucks, live music, a social justice panel, arts and crafts, books, face painting, a moon bounce, science experiments for kids, Philly Goats, resource tables, historic tours of Johnson House, a vendor marketplace, and more.
June 24–26:Stenton Museum will host Garden Painting, Outdoor Quilting, and Insect Exploring at Stenton, a three-day series of activities at 4601 N. 18th St. Neighbors can take part in a painting workshop inspired by Stenton’s landscape, receive hands-on quilting and embroidery lessons, and learn more about different insect species. June 26: Center in the Park is hosting its Pride in the Park event from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at Vernon Park. Welcoming adults ages 55 and up, there will be live performances and festive activities in an effort to honor love, diversity, and inclusion. To learn more, visit here.
June 26: G-Town Art and Sound will host its Creative Kickback and Art Show from 7–10 p.m. at Our House Culture Center, located at 6380 Germantown Avenue. The event will create an artistic space where community members can view work from various visual artists, alongside a DJ, food truck, and complimentary wine.
June 27: New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ–Germantown hosts its Third Annual Germantown Community Day at 11 a.m. on E. Clapier Street. The block party-style event will have food, fun activities, a gaming truck, fellowship, and opportunities to connect with neighbors. Community members can also request participation, vendor space, or volunteer opportunities.
June 27: The Friends of Fernhill Park will host its Wild Food Foraging Walk from 12-2 p.m. at Fernhill Park (4600 Morris Street). There, herbalist and expert forager, Lady Danni, will lead a guided walk where folks can learn how to identify and gather food and medicine from wild plants and trees. To RSVP, visit here.
June 27: The Maplewood Collective will host the Maplewood Night Market from 4–9 p.m. on W. Maplewood Mall. The evening will feature a vendor marketplace with food, accessories, art, clothing, and other community-centered experiences.
